Safar Ki Dua | The Complete Islamic Travel Prayer Guide

Every journey, whether it’s a daily commute, a flight, or the biggest journey of a lifetime like Hajj or Umrah, calls for remembering Allah before setting off. This is the purpose Safar Ki Dua serves: a short but powerful supplication that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited before every kind of travel.

This page brings everything into one place: the complete text of the dua, its meaning, authentic Hadith references, and then practical, mode-specific guidance for car travel, flying, Hajj, and Umrah.

Complete Safar Ki Dua

Roman Transliteration:
Subhanal-lazi sakhkhara lana haza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina haza al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda.

English Translation:
“Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could never have accomplished this by ourselves. And to our Lord we shall return.”
“O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and for deeds that please You.”

Urdu Translation:
پاک ہے وہ ذات جس نے اس سواری کو ہمارے قابو میں کیا، ورنہ ہم خود اسے قابو میں نہیں لا سکتے تھے، اور بےشک ہم اپنے رب کی طرف لوٹنے والے ہیں۔
اے اللہ! ہم اس سفر میں تجھ سے نیکی اور تقویٰ مانگتے ہیں، اور ایسے عمل کی توفیق مانگتے ہیں جس سے تو راضی ہو۔

Hindi Translation:
पाक है वह ज़ात जिसने इस सवारी को हमारे क़ाबू में किया, वरना हम खुद इसे क़ाबू में नहीं ला सकते थे, और बेशक हम अपने रब की तरफ़ लौटने वाले हैं।
ऐ अल्लाह! हम इस सफ़र में तुझसे नेकी और तक़वा माँगते हैं, और ऐसे अमल की तौफ़ीक़ माँगते हैं जिससे तू राज़ी हो।

Meaning: The dua has two parts. The first acknowledges that any means of transport, whether a car or a plane, is only under our control because Allah made it so. The second asks for righteousness and piety throughout the journey, not just a safe arrival.

Authentic Hadith

  • Sahih Muslim records this exact dua as recited by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before mounting any means of transport for a journey.
  • Sunan Abu Dawood and Jami’ al-Tirmidhi contain supporting narrations of the same practice.
  • Hisnul Muslim compiles this dua in its travel chapter, drawn from these authentic sources.

Since cars and planes did not exist at the time of the Prophet ﷺ, scholars apply this dua to any modern means of transport, since the wording refers generally to “this,” whatever vehicle is being used.

Car Travel Dua – For Everyday Driving

Pausing for a few seconds before starting the engine turns a routine act into a brief moment of worship.

When to recite: Before starting the engine, before a long road trip, before the daily commute, before night driving, and before driving in bad weather.

Traveling with family: The driver can recite it aloud so everyone benefits. A separate informal dua for children’s safety can also be made.

Safe Driving in Islam: Dua is never a substitute for responsibility. Islam calls for obeying traffic laws, avoiding reckless driving, respecting other road users, staying patient, and avoiding distractions like phone use. Tawakkul means doing your part fully, then trusting Allah with the outcome.

Plane Travel Dua – Before Flying

The same dua is recited before flying, but at 30,000 feet it carries extra weight since a passenger has no real control over the aircraft.

When to recite: Before boarding, as the plane begins takeoff, and with increased dhikr during turbulence.

Flying Etiquette: Patience during delays, good conduct with cabin crew and fellow passengers, and following safety instructions are all part of Tawakkul, not a replacement for it.

Important note: There is no separate authentic dua specifically for turbulence. General dhikr and personal dua are recommended instead; many “turbulence duas” shared online have no real Hadith source.

Hajj Travel Dua – Preparing for the Journey to Hajj

The journey to Hajj begins with the same Safar Ki Dua, but given the significance of this trip, spiritual preparation matters just as much.

Spiritual Preparation: Sincere intention, repentance, seeking forgiveness from others, settling debts and responsibilities, and learning the basic rites of Hajj beforehand.

Travel Sunnahs: Choosing good travel companions, making dua consistently, and practicing patience in crowded spaces.

Checklist essentials: Passport and Hajj visa, Ihram garments, comfortable footwear, basic first-aid, and a written copy of this dua.

Umrah Travel Dua – For Journeys at Any Time of Year

Umrah can be performed any time of year, often with shorter preparation time, but the dua and sincerity of intention remain just as important.

Spiritual Preparation: Even on a short timeline, take time for sincere intention, repentance, and seeking forgiveness.

First-Time Traveler Checklist: Visa and booking confirmations, Ihram garments, comfortable walking shoes, first-aid essentials, and physical readiness for Tawaf and Sa’i.

Common Mistakes (Across All Travel Types)

  • Relying only on dua while ignoring basic safety precautions
  • Reciting unauthentic “special” duas circulated online (such as a specific car dua or turbulence dua)
  • Rushing through the Arabic without correct pronunciation
  • Reciting the words without reflecting on their meaning
